The poker world is shocked by the death of one of the smartest and brilliant poker minds.
Author and poker player David Sklansky died at 78. Sklansky was one of the pioneers of modern poker strategy.
Sklansky died of a heart attack in Las Vegas on March 23.
He was born on December 22, 1947, in Teaneck.
He earned the nickname "The Mathematician" because he introduced mathematical concepts and structure to the game's strategies.
At a time when most people played poker based on gut feelings, he introduced new concepts into the game, such as logic, chance, and structured thought.
A Pioneer Who Changed How Poker Is Played
In the 1970s and 1980s, Sklansky was one of the first poker players to think theoretically about the game.
He made decisions based on numerical analysis rather than relying on guesswork or chance.
He won two big titles in 1982. The first was in Event #7, an $800 Mixed Doubles Seven Card Stud tournament, where he and Dani Kelly played together. He won again later that year in Event #12, a $1,000 Limit 5-Card Draw event
The winners that year got gold watches instead of bracelets, which was an intriguing change.
But in 1983, the WSOP returned to its old system and began awarding bracelets. Skalansky added another title to his list when he won the $1,000 Limit Omaha event in 1983.
As the years went by, he also became well-known on TV during the 2000s poker boom. Some of the shows he was on were Poker Superstars on Fox Sports Net.
During the poker boom of the 2000s, Sklansky began showing up at many live games. He has been on TV shows like Poker Superstars on Fox Sports Net.
The Book That Defined Poker Strategy

The Theory of Poker Book
Despite being a successful tournament player, his biggest impact and legacy were away from the tables.
The Theory of Poker, published in 1978, is considered one of the best strategy books in poker history.
The book broke down complicated concepts into simple ideas that can be easily understood and guided players on how to make decisions step-by-step.
Sklansky's work was recognized and respected by other poker legends, such as Doyle Brunson. Sklansky even wrote a chapter in Brunson's famous book Super/System.
This made Sklansky even more popular in the poker world.
One time, Sklansky said that being good at maths helped him get along with the best players in the game.
Playing hands used to be a common way for poker pros to settle debates about who was the best.
Sklansky didn't have to deal a single card to figure out which hand was better in the same situation. He just did some simple maths.
His poker skills and understanding set him apart in a competitive setting.
A Career of Writing and Lasting Influence

Sklansky was a renowned author who wrote or co-wrote 18 books about gaming and poker.
His books covered a wide range of topics, from beginner tips to advanced techniques.
Hold'em Poker, DUCY?, Limit Hold'em for Advanced Players, and Sklansky Talks Blackjack are some of his best-known books.
Many poker players learned about pot odds, expected value, and long-term thinking from his books.
In small-stakes no-limit hold'em, players learnt from the book how to capitalize when weaker players made mistakes.
There was a time when three of Sklansky's books were all in the top 100 on Amazon at the same time.
That achievement showed how well-known and influential he was.
Sklansky could also play poker and win. The Hendon Mob indicated that he made more than $1.4 million in live tournament earnings.
He won $419,040 after coming in third place at the 2006 World Poker Tour Borgata Poker Open. It was the most money he had ever made in his career.
Controversies and a Complicated Legacy
Despite Sklansky's greatness, his life was not always smooth.
Recently he was arrested on domestic battery charges. The case did not go forward because the district attorney chose to drop the charges.
People in the poker world have also talked a lot about the sad case of Brandi Hawbaker in 2008.
Despite his extensive work to improve the game, Sklansky was not inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame.
Because of his work, reputation, and impact on the game, most poker fans thought he should be in the Poker Hall of Fame.
His works are still useful for all players, from beginners keen to learn how to rank their hands to experienced players wanting to take their game to the next level.
It's clear that the awards are coming in. People will remember him for a long time because he was one of the first people to play poker.
