Watch on YouTubeShort deck poker looks familiar at first, but removing the 2s through 5s changes much more than the size of the deck. The game uses the same basic betting structure as No-Limit Hold’em, but hand rankings can differ by venue, flushes are commonly ranked above full houses, and straights have a much bigger role in the game.
Coach Weasel explains why Hold’em instincts can lead to expensive mistakes in a short deck. Draws generally complete more often, while flush draws are actually less likely to hit, making suited hands especially valuable. Starting-hand rankings also shift significantly: pocket kings, pocket aces, and ace-king suited are highlighted as the main premium hands, while hands like ace-king offsuit and pocket tens are far less valuable than Hold’em players might expect.
